ICE CREAM IN HELL – TINSLEY ELLIS

Ik weet natuurlijk niet hoe familiair jullie zijn met de naam Tinsley Ellis. Hij timmert al heel lang aan de weg en levert regelmatig een pracht album af. Maar hij is geen naam die festivals laat vol lopen en het is ook moeilijk om zijn specifieke bijdragen en talenten te benoemen die hem doen opvallen bij de bluesliefhebber. Ik las ergens dat hij een gisteristen-gitarist is. Hij staat heel hoog aangeschreven bij de collega´s, het grote publiek (bij blues natuurlijk ook niet echt omvangrijk) zal zijn albums nauwelijks kennen, maar zal wel zeer verrast zijn als ze er toch een horen of hem in een liveset horen. Want wat speelt die man fantastisch gitaar! En daarbij gaat het niet om zijn vingervlugheid, maar vooral om zijn toon, zijn geluid en zijn speelmotto “Less is more“: de noten die je weg laat maken de noten die je wel speelt vaak indrukwekkend. Je raadt het al, als je nog niks van Tinsley Ellis in huis hebt is het album Ice Cream in Hell een prima starpunt! Bluesrock is wat je krijgt, alles is door hem zelf gecomponeerd, hij zingt er zelf bij en alhoewel hij geen super stem heeft weet hij met de voordracht weer wel indruk te maken. En dat je flink kunt variëren in het Bluesrock genre, dat bewijst hij ook door af en toe in zijn spel herinneringen op te roepen aan Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Duane Allman en Jeff Beck. Dat het album wordt uitgebracht op het Alligator label wil èn zeggen dat hij wel tot de mainstream bluesartiesten behoort in de USA èn dat het een kristalheldere productie is geworden. Mogen wij eindigen zoals wij zo vaak doen en verzuchten? Wat zou het mooi zijn als we deze muzikant hier in de omgeving eens live zouden mogen meemaken! |
