HEAVENS TO BETTY – JEREMIAH JOHNSON

Eigenlijk kun je de artiest zelf ook aan het woord laten. Op de vraag wat Jeremiah Johnson voor ogen stond met dit nieuwe album, zegt hij: “I want this record to be something you’ll want to crank up when you’re with your friends and celebrating life,” he considers. “I want people to throw this record in the stereo and get a kick in the ass…”.
Geen idee waar de albumtitel naar verwijst, maar ‘Heavens to Betty’ is een aardig album geworden. De muziek van Johnson, en dan vooral zijn gitaarspel, is een mooie mix geworden van Texas Blues en de blues uit Louisiana (St. Louis om precies te zijn). De soepele stem van deze artiest geeft veel liedjes ook nog een beetje een ‘pop’ karakter aan. Verveling ligt nergens op de loer. Hier en daar worden we verrast door blazers, een ronkende 2e sologitaar of heerlijke vette toetsen. De medewerkers zijn niet de minste: orgelklanken van Rick Steff, Frank Bauer op saxofoon, de drums worden bespeeld door Bennet Schaeffer en bassist van dienst is Tony Anthonis. |
